About Me
- Name: Molly Kendall
- Location: Hobart, Tasmania, Australia
This blog tracks my three years of exploration and Ethnography through Australian Sustainable Communities (aka Eco-villages, Communes & Intentional Communities). My Anthropological honours thesis "Hippies in Suits - Creating Alternatives Through Intentional Community" tracked the historical arc of Australian attempts at communal, environmental living and the changing way these communities invent themselves (with varying levels of success). As a certain level of sharing is required to live an environmentally sustainable life, I made sure I visited communities with varying levels of 'communality' (sharing). My goal here is to show you what I discovered and contribute to the discourse about the extent to which our highly individualised society can successfully incorporate aspects eco-living. I hope to convey a sense of the vibrant Australian Eco-village movement, which continues to sew and reap largely unnoticed. This movement is thriving and deeply historically-rooted. Modern interpretations steadily gain momentum as collective consumption permeates the urban ‘un-intentional’ community, connecting and changing us all for the better.
